Water Removal and Insurance Claim: Mistakes That Cost You

September 19, 2025

Water damage can strike unexpectedly, causing panic and uncertainty. Sometimes water damage appears slowly over time, and other times it is sudden and overwhelming. Regardless, if you have water damage or need water removal in Gainesville, FL, you may have concerns about choosing the right restoration company and whether your insurance claim will be accepted. PUDDLES Restoration knows these anxieties well—homeowners worry about being overcharged or having their claims denied altogether. This blog will guide you through the common mistakes that can cost you during water removal and insurance claims, emphasizing why immediate, professional water removal is the critical first step to protect your property and your finances.

The High Stakes of Choosing Prompt Water Removal

Time is of the essence when dealing with water damage . Whether it’s from a burst pipe, storm flooding, or an appliance failure, quick action matters. Many homeowners make the costly mistake of delaying water removal, hoping to “wait and see” if the damage gets worse. This hesitation often leads to escalated problems like (1) structural damage and (2) Mold, which complicate insurance claims. Your failure to call PUDDLES Restoration in a timely manner can result in portions and/or all of your claim(s) being denied, particularly if you incur secondary damages because of your hesitation.

Hiring a 24/7 emergency water removal company, such as PUDDLES Restoration, ensures that water extraction begins immediately, thus minimizing damages. Our IICRC certified technicians remove water and assess the affected areas for hidden moisture using a combination of moisture meters and infrared cameras, while documenting all damages thoroughly. This documentation, which includes many pictures, is invaluable when filing insurance claims, serving as proof of the extent and timing of damage. Our pictures are date stamped, time stamped, and geolocation stamped. The combination of all three makes it difficult for an insurance company to negate. Skipping or delaying this step can weaken your claim, opening the door to denials or reduced payouts.

PUDDLES Restoration is:

  • A IICRC Certified Firm with the following specializations, among others:
    • IICRC Applied Structural Drying (ASD)
    • IICRC Water Damage Restoration (WRT)
    • IICRC Commercial Drying Specialist (CDS)

Common Mistakes That Jeopardize Your Insurance Claim

It’s easy to make errors when dealing with insurance providers, especially under stress. Here are some frequent mistakes that homeowners should avoid:

1. Failing to Act Quickly

Waiting too long before calling for water removal in Gainesville, FL, can worsen damage and complicate insurance verification. Insurance companies expect prompt mitigation actions; a delay can be interpreted as negligence by YOU. This delay increases repair costs but might also cause your insurer to question whether the damage was avoidable, leading to a lower claim payout or complete denial. We have seen this many times before, particularly when Mold develops as a result of YOU “drying” it yourself (usually with a mop and towels).

2. Not Using Professional 24/7 Emergency Water Removal Services

Attempting DIY water removal or using inexperienced companies can result in incomplete drying and poor damage assessment. Insurance adjusters may question the legitimacy of damages or the method used, negatively impacting claims. You will inevitable be asked, “How was it dried”? If you do not use a professional restoration company (e.g., PUDDLES Restoration) to dry the affected area, you are likely to get a partial denial. This applies regardless of whether you are in Gainesville, Ocala, The Villages, etc.

Using a mop or towel will NOT dry this, but you will get the false impression that you did a great job.

A month later your house will stink as Mold starts to off-gas.

Fortunately, PUDDLES Restoration is also a Florida-licensed Mold Remediator and an IICRC Certified Odor Removal restoration company.

• IICRC Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS)

3. Insufficient Documentation During Water Removal

Proper documentation includes photos, detailed reports, and moisture readings. Without professional help, many homeowners fail to capture accurate evidence, a crucial element insurers require for claim validation. Using the wrong equipment will likely result in the insurance company doubting the accuracy of the information you provide. Let us deal with your insurance company.

4. Misunderstanding Your Insurance Policy

Not all water damage is covered equally. Some policies exclude certain types of water loss or require specific mitigation actions. Lack of knowledge leads to unexpected claim denials.

5. Not Communicating Effectively With Your Insurance Adjuster

Providing incomplete or inconsistent information to your insurer can create mistrust or confusion, jeopardizing claim approval. Professional restoration companies often assist in communication to keep everything transparent. Do not lie to your insurance company, ever!

PUDDLES Restoration can help you understand and avoid these common pitfalls, thus significantly improving your chances of a successful insurance claim to protect both your home and your financial interests.

Water Damage Restoration in Gainesville, FL
July 8, 2025
Two referral partners (Ref Ptnrs A & B) called us to perform an emergency water damage inspection b/c they were told that houses Y & Z were wet. Ref Ptnr A had one business day left for the inspection period. Ref Ptnr B was accused of causing water to get under ¾ inch solid glued-down wood flooring (these were really nice floors), and the contractor started removing the floor. Fortunately, Ref Ptnr B was able to convince the contractor to STOP removing any more flooring by saying, “My guy is licensed and certified and has the correct equipment to determine if the floor is wet, and he [ PUDDLES ] will be here by 7:00 AM tomorrow to inspect the floor.” CONCLUSION: Neither house Y or Z was wet. If the floors had read wet: Ref Ptnr A’s real estate deal would have failed, and Ref Ptnr B would have incurred 10X what he was paid to fix the floor. Our followers know that green is good when using a Protimeter MMS3 moisture meter, but to be safe, we also used a FLIR infrared camera and a Tramex CMEX5 Moisture meter to inspect the ensuite master bathroom-tiled floor.
