TRAUMA AND CRIME SCENE TECHNICIAN (TCST)

• 26 February 2025

The Trauma and Crime Scene Technician (TCST) certification covers the unique situations encountered when performing trauma and crime scene cleanup, regardless of surface, item, or location. The certification demonstrates knowledge of the various procedures and precautions taken when performing work at a trauma/crime scene and is based on the ANSI/IICRC S540 Standard for Trauma and Crime Scene Cleanup. Upon achieving the certification, the technician demonstrates knowledge about inspecting and investigating human blood and other potentially infectious material (OPIM) contamination to establish hazard assessments, work plans, and procedures for cleaning and safely transporting contaminated material.

 Emphasis is placed on:

  • health and safety requirements (including the hands-on donning and doffing of PPE and creating a hazard assessment of the area),
  • structural remediation (cleaning and demo),
  • contents remediation (cleaning and disposal),
  • the cleaning and disposal of vehicles and industrial machinery (including lockout/tagout and working with industrial site officers)
  • Biocide and Antimicrobial Technology
  • Administrative Procedures, Documentation, and Risk Management
  • Inspection and Preliminary Determination
  • Equipment and Tools

An IICRC Triple Master is a rare and elite status achieved by earning all three Master designations from the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (“IICRC”): 1) Master Water Restorer (“MWR”), 2) Master Fire and Smoke Restorer (“MSR”), and 3) Master Textile Cleaner (“MTC”). The IICRC is a global organization with 54,028 active Certified Technicians and more than 6,500 Certified Firms worldwide. As of 9/15/2026, only 971 of the 54,028 active Certified Technicians (less than 1.8% globally) hold the Triple Master designation, which requires years of documented field experience and numerous prerequisite courses. The IICRC's Logistics Manager of Operations, Max Sparks, confirmed the numbers via email on September 15, 2026.
